Hawaiian Flowers

Hawaiian Flowers and Leis

hawaiian flower leis The state of Hawaii consists of eight main islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and the Big Island of Hawaii. Hawaii is the only state in the United Stats which grows coffee. More than one-third of the world's commercial supply of pineapples comes from Hawaii. However, when people mention Hawaii, you probably think about beautiful beaches, tropical climats, and Hawaiian Leis and Hawaiian Flowers.

Many flowers are synonymous with Hawaii, including Anthurium?s. Even though the Anthurium is not native to the Hawaiian Islands, in the minds of many people, the Anthurium is the Hawaiian flower. The Hawaiian state flower is the Hibiscus, and the Protea is another flower commonly associated with Hawaii.

However, on and above the aforementioned flowers of Hawaii, the true flowers of Hawaii are those used in Hawaiian Leis. Not many people know that each Island uses a specific flower in their Leis to represent that Hawaiian Island. The flowers used in each Hawaiian Island Leis are as follows:

The Hawaiian Island of Niihau uses the Pupu Shell Flower which is a white flower.
The Hawaiian Island of Kauai uses the Mokihana (Green Berry) Flower which is a purple flower.
The Hawaiian Island of Oahu uses the Ilima Flower which is a yellow flower.
The Hawaiian Island of Maui uses the Lokelani (Pink Cottage Rose) Flower which is a pink flower.
The Hawaiian Island of Molokai uses the White Kukui Blossom Flower which is a green flower.
The Hawaiian Island of Lanai uses the Kaunaoa (Orange Air Plant) Flower which is an orange flower.
The Hawaiian Island of Kahoolawe uses the Hinahina (Beach Heliotrope) Flower which is a grey flower.
The Hawaiian Island of Hawaii (the Big Island) uses the Lehua Ohia Flower which is a red flower.
